NARRATIVE: On Wednesday, July 2 2008 at 3:35 PM, 6 Companies of Spokane Firefighters, 4 Engines, 1 Senior Ladder and 1 Heavy Rescue Company under the direction of Battalion Chief Cornelius responded to a reported structure fire at 9 South Pittsburg. Within minutes, Engine 7 reported heavy smoke fire showing from the second floor of the multiple-use building as they left the station. The building is a large two-story building with basement storage, two commercial businesses on the first floor and multiple apartments on the second floor.

As initial companies stretched pre-connected lines from Engine 7, the first ladder company fought their way to the second floor to evacuate residents and search for victims. When the first Chief arrived, he sized up the status of the fire and requested a second alarm due to the construction, potential for trapped victims and extreme heat (98 degrees ambient temperature at the time of the fire).

The second alarm brought an additional Ladder Company, Pumper-Ladder, three engines as well as the SFD's Training staff, Red Cross, SFD's CARES and additional Chief Officers. The IC also special-requested three AMR ambulances and their supervisor de to the potential for residents to require treatment from the effects of the smoke and fire.

Over the course of 40-minutes, fire attack teams extinguished the fire. Ladder companies searched the entire building removing occupants as they went. The building was ventilated and atmosphere was made tenable simultaneously. Rehydration and constant rotation of companies were necessary to prevent illness and injury of the firefighters from the extreme heat and conditions. SFD Training and EMS Staff personnel monitored firefighter's vital signs closely and aggressively re-hydrated them during the incident.

The incident was under controlled within 90 minutes and no firefighters were injured during the event. District 9 and District 8 companies were called to staff two SFD Stations during the incident.


PROBABLE CAUSE: The majority of damage was confined to the second floor apartment, unit number 6. The aggressive interior fire attack not only assisted in extinguishing the fire, it also provided Firefighters the opportunity to save the majority of the building and contents. The preliminary cause of the fire has been determined to be accidental--a young male using a flammable liquid during floor cleaning. Vapors from the flammable liquid found a pilot light which caused an explosive fire. The young male was identified by an officer from Rescue 1 and immediately treated by SFD Paramedics and transported to the hospital urgently.
DAMAGE EXTENT: The majority of damage was confined to the second floor apartment, unit number 6. The aggressive interior fire attack not only assisted in extinguishing the fire, it also provided Firefighters the opportunity to save a large portion of the building and contents.

NARRATIVE: On 06/24/08 at approximately 1352 hrs units of the City of Spokane Fire Department responded to 808 W. Maxwell upon report of a structure fire. First arriving crews on the scene found a one story, wood-frame, single family residence with light smoke showing from the front of the structure. SFD members advanced a pre-connected hose-line to the fire area, which appeared to be the exterior siding near the front porch. The burning siding was extinguished and additional siding was removed to check for any fire extension to other areas of the home. Fire crews checked both the basement and the attic areas and found no fire extension. Gas powered fans were then used to clear the rest of the house of any lingering smoke.

A total of 10 apparatus with 27 firefighters responded to this incident. No injuries to either firefighters or civilians were reported. No one was home at the time of the incident. Fire crews were on scene for approximately 70 minutes.



PROBABLE CAUSE: The cause of this fire is currently undetermined and under investigation. A Fire Investigator was still on scene at the time of this news release. Additional information on this incident will be available later by contacting Lt. Jimmy Bowen at 625-7053.
DAMAGE EXTENT: The main area of fire damage was to the exterior and interior wall of the residence near the front porch. This is also the area in which siding was removed to check for any additional spread of the fire. The fire was confined to the exterior siding and a small amount of interior wall framing. Minor smoke damage was evident on the main floor and in the basement areas.

NARRATIVE: On June 23rd, 2008 at 2:25 P.M. the Spokane Fire Department responded 3 engine companies, 1 pumper ladder company, 1 ladder company, 1 rescue unit and 2 battalion chiefs to a house fire located at 2812 W. Cleveland. Fire crews found a one story home with smoke coming from the attic and roof. Firefighters made quick access into the home and with the use of their thermal imaging camera, they found a fire burning above the bathroom ceiling. Because this fire was in a concealed space, fire crews had to pull the ceiling down to expose the area in order to extinguish the fire. At the same time, a ladder crew was poised on the roof ready to ventilate in coordination with the fire extinguishment effort going on below. As a result of their quick action, the fire was kept small and involved a small portion of the attic. Fire damage was confined to ceiling joists, wiring and attic insulation. A total of 20 firefighters fought this fire. The homeowner, who was at work, was notified and soon arrived. The fire was called in by an alert neighbor who noticed smoke coming from the eaves and roof. The investigation revealed that this fire had been burning for a long time undetected in the attic and was caused by an electrical malfunction in wiring connected to a bathroom fan. It was found that there were working smoke detectors inside the home in the living areas, however the fire was burning above these locations, and the smoke that was generated rose vertically and stayed within the attic space and did not activate the detectors below. There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians.

PROBABLE CAUSE: Electrical malfunction involving wiring and a bathroom fan.

NARRATIVE: On 06/22/08 at approximately 0626 hrs units of the City of Spokane Fire Department responded to 625 N. Monroe upon report of a structure fire. First arriving fire department crews found smoke coming from the roof and eaves of a one story, masonry block commercial structure. The occupant of the fire damaged building is Golden Rule Brakes. Fire department crews advanced pre-connected hose-lines into the interior of the structure to extinguish the advancing blaze. At the same time crews were sent to cut a hole in the roof to ventilate the heat and toxic gases that had built up inside the building from the fire. The fire was brought under control within approximately 30 minutes, with crews remaining on scene to work with the property manager and conduct overhaul operations for about another 90 minutes.

A total of 33 firefighters on 11 trucks responded to this incident. No injuries to firefighters or civilians were reported.

NARRATIVE:
On June 20, 2008 at approximately 0921 hours, the Spokane Fire Department dispatched 2 Aerial Ladders, 3 Engines, 1 Heavy Rescue and 2 Command vehicles to a reported apartment fire located at 1306 S. Westcliff Place. The arriving fire crews found light smoke showing from the eaves and ridge vents of a two story apartment building. The building occupants had been alerted to the fire by means of a smoke detector and had evacuated the building. Fire crews found a smoldering fire in the attic area above a second floor bathroom. The fire was quickly extinguished by Engine 4's crew and confined to the ceiling area above the bathroom. There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters at this incident.


PROBABLE CAUSE: The cause appears to have been an overheated bathroom exhaust fan.

NARRATIVE: June 20, 2008 the Spokane Fire responded to its second mattress fire of the night and within a mile of the first one. The second fire at 4003 E. Cleveland came in at 1:19 am and is under investigation. Two civilians sustained minor injuries, one has burns on the wrist and the second was smoke inhalation. Neither of the patients wanted to be transported and was looked at by Fire Department Paramedics on the scene. When the homeowner was asked if smoke detectors woke them up he claimed they did not have any and the smoke woke him up. This is a dangerous mindset that smoke will wake you up as it is more likely to suffocate you in your sleep. You can not beat the reliability of working smoke detectors properly placed inside your house for early warning of fire. The Fire Department responded 7 pieces of equipment with 19 Firefighters to this incident and quickly brought the fire under control with one attack line. The house was searched to make sure everyone was out and ventilation fans were set to clear the smoke out of the house.

NARRATIVE: Just after 10 pm on June 19, 2008 the Spokane Fire Department was dispatched on a reported house fire at 3411 E. Jackson in Spokane, WA. One Ladder Truck, one Rescue Unit, four Engines and a Battalion Chief with 19 Firefighters responded to what turned out to be a mattress fire with heat and smoke damage to the contents of one bedroom. Adults on scene indicated that one or more of the 3 children at the home were playing with matches. The children's ages were 13, 5 and 2. Information was gathered regarding the 3 children and will be turned over to a Fire Investigator and the departments Pub. Ed. Officer. Quick action by the resident with initial attack and then closing the door minimized the spread of the fire. Upon arrival Fire Crews rapidly removed the mattresses and extinguished the fire. It was noticed in the home that the smoke detector sustained significant damage due to heat and did not have a battery so was not sounding. The Spokane Fire Department would like to remind the public of the importance of keeping lighters, matches and other ignition sources out of reach of children. Also, the importance of maintaining smoke detectors in a working manner for the safety of everyone in the home cannot be over stated.

NARRATIVE: On June 17, 2008 at 0351 hours the Spokane Fire Department dispatched 6 fire apparatus and 2 command vehicles (total of 24 personnel), for a reported structure fire located at 218 W. 25th Ave. Fire Dispatch received several 911 calls from the home owners and neighbors who reported a large amount of fire in the home's garage. Engine 9 arrived within 4 minutes of being dispatched and reported that fire had fully involved the home's garage and the 2 vehicles parked inside. Engine 9 extended pre-connected hose lines to fight the fire and assigned work to the other incoming apparatus. Additional fire hose lines were deployed to protect the surrounding exposures. The fire was brought under control within 15 minutes, but several units worked at the scene for well over an hour.

There were no injuries to civilians at this fire. One firefighter reported a strained shoulder as a result of fighting the fire. The quick actions of the firefighters confined the majority of the fire damage to the garage and contents which were a total loss. The radiant heat from the fire cracked windows on the home and melted exterior yard lights.




PROBABLE CAUSE: The fire cause at this time is still under investigation. Early indicators are leading us to believe this fire was intentionally set.

Division CITY: Spokane STATE: WA ZIP: 99202 NARRATIVE: At 11:54 am on Monday June 16, 2008 the Spokane Fire Department responded to a reported apartment fire at 1221 ½ S. Division. The initial reports to the responding crews was that flames and smoke were seen coming from an apartment and bystanders had removed a victim which they were doing CPR on. The first advanced life support apparatus on scene with Paramedics was assigned to patient care while the other firefighting crews were taking care of the fire. A quick knockdown was attained by a rapid deployment of a 1 ¾ inch attack line. The fire was confined to the apartment of origin with minimal fire damage to the apartment. Fire damage was mostly on the carpet near the bed with smoke damage throughout the apartment. 32 Firefighters responded on numerous apparatus with Chief's staff due to the report of CPR being performed on the victim by private citizens. The patient was transported to Sacred Heart Hospital with a strong pulse but still in respiratory arrest. His condition is unknown at this time. The quick actions of the private citizens appear to have saved the residents life by getting the victim out of the apartment then intervening with CPR. The cause of the fire appears to be accidental but is under investigation by the Spokane Fire Department SIU. PROBABLE CAUSE: Under investigation DAMAGE EXTENT: Fire damage to a piece of the carpet in the vicinity of the bed and smoke damage throughout the apartment. NARRATIVE: At 1:31 AM on June 16th the Spokane Fire department responded to 1417 South Laura for a reported structure fire. Engine Company 14 reported a light smoke showing. An attack lead was advanced into a bedroom and extinguished the fire. The fire was confined to a bed and bedding, night stand, and light smoke throughout... A smoke alarm awaken the mother and her young child, they got out of the house and called 911. The Spokane Fire Department would like to remind the public that unattended candles can and will start a fires. Candles should be in proper container and away any combustibles when being used.
3 Engines 1 Ladder, 1 Pumper Ladder, 1 Rescue apparatus and 2 command officers for a total of 21firefighters that responded to this call. The cause of this fire was an unattended candle.

NARRATIVE: On 6/15/08 at 7:47 A.M. on June 15th, 2008 the Spokane Fire Department responded to a reported garage and recreational vehicle fire located at 2414 W. Mallon. The first fire crews to arrive reported a large amount of fire enveloping a recreational vehicle parked next to a wooden 3 stall garage. The fire was spreading to the garage and it was discovered that gasoline was burning near the vehicle. A decision to "upgrade" the alarm was then made to summon an additional crew to the incident. Firefighters rapidly stretched hoses to the fire and were able to contain the flames in a short amount of time. The vehicle was a total loss and a van that was parked nearby also sustained fire damage. As a result of the rapid spread rate of this fire, the wood frame garage sustained heavy fire damage as well. A total of 23 firefighters and 2 battalion chiefs responded to this call with 4 engine companies, 2 ladder companies, and 1 rescue company. Fire crews remained at the fire for 2 1/2 hours making sure that all of the "hotspots" were thoroughly extinguished. There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians. The fire cause is undetermined and under investigation at this time by the Spokane Fire Department Special Investigation Unit.

DAMAGE EXTENT: The R.V. was a total loss. One company van that was parked behind the R.V. sustained heavy fire damage. The 3 stall wooden garage received heavy damage. There was also some water damage to the interior of an adjacent storage building.

NARRATIVE: At 0145 hrs. on June 14, 2008 the Spokane Fire Department responded 3 engines, 2 ladders, a rescue truck and a Battalion Chief to a reported office building on fire. The first engine on scene found flames and heavy smoke from the rear of a medical office building at 1402 S. Grand Blvd. Crews forced entry to the interior of the building and found that most of the fire was confined to the exterior. The fire originated in a dumpster next to the building and quickly spread to the adjoining wall and eves. The fire was knocked down just as it began spreading through the flat-roof joists to the interior. Crews were able to protect the contents, including a medical records storage room, from significant damage. Fire crews remained on scene for several hours completing extinguishment and overhaul.

PROBABLE CAUSE: The area of origin of the fire appears to be the dumpster at the rear of the building. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by Capt. NARRATIVE: At 10:03 0n June 11th the City of Spokane Fire department responded to East 3728 3rd Ave for a reported structure fire. Upon arrival Engine Company 7 reported smoke showing from a 2 story wood frame house. A search was ordered and attack leads were advanced to the 2nd floor where the fire had already made its way into the knee walls and attic the full length of the house. Crews attacked the upstairs blaze until they were ordered out by command for their protection, the entire roof and attic space was on fire. The roof was left to burn so as to open it up and release the heat, smoke and hot gases. Large leads were used to extinguish the flames. Crews then reentered the structure and extinguished the hidden fires and hot spots. This fire was brought under control in about two and one half hours. Crews will stay on scene till the morning. The structure was heavily damaged by smoke heat and water. No one was found in side during the search. No injuries to report. The fire is under investigation. Twenty two firefighters and two command officers arrived to fight this blaze.

NARRATIVE: On 5/31/08 at 12:07 A.M. the Spokane Fire Department responded 3 engine companies, a pumper ladder company, 1 ladder company, 1 rescue unit and 2 battalion chiefs to a house fire located at 2908 E. Hoffman. Upon arrival, fire crews found a wood frame structure that had fire coming through a portion of the roof as well as a side window and door. Engine 15's crew, the first to arrive, immediately attacked the fire while also asking for backup and a crew to ventilate the roof. It was soon determined that both adult occupants had made their safe escape from the home. As the firefighters worked their way through the home to attack the fire, they soon found that the fire was mainly involving a portion of a laundry room, including the walls and ceiling immediately surrounding this area. The fire was also rapidly extending vertically into the attic. Through their fast and aggressive actions, the firefighters were able to knock down the fire and confine it to the back portion of the home. The majority of the home was saved, however smoke damage was extensive throughout the building. A total of 21 firefighters responded to this call and it took them 30 minutes to effectively contain the fire. Fire crews remained at this incident until 3:00 A.M. conducting final extinguishment and making sure all of the "hotspots" were completely out. This was accomplished by the use of thermal imaging cameras, shovels, chainsaws and axes. The attic insulation consisted of paper, sawdust and cellulose which kept firefighters digging for hotspots for a long time. The Spokane Fire Department Special Investigation Unit was called in to investigate the fire cause. At this time, the incident is still under investigation. There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians. The Red Cross arrived to take care of the two displaced tenants that resided in the home. The home suffered extensive smoke damage throughout and the home also sustained fire damage to the laundry and bathroom areas as well as extensive damage to the roof. It was reported that one of the tenants had smelled smoke and woke up the other tenant. The home did not have a smoke detector. Because this fire occurred at night during sleeping hours and because the home did not have a detector installed, the residents were extremely lucky that they woke up to the smell of smoke and were able to escape. NARRATIVE: The Spokane City Fire Dept. responded firefighting apparatus and crews to 1403 E. Hartson Ave. at 10:56 on Sunday morning, May 25th, for a reported apartment fire. A large column of heavy black smoke was clearly visible to the firefighters as they approached the scene. Initial reports from the first-in fire company indicated smoke and flames were showing out of a south-facing 3rd floor window of a three story wood/frame apartment building consisting of 6 apartments. Fire Dept. Radio reports to the arriving fire companies indicated that there may be children inside of the apartment that was on fire. Until confirmation could be made that there were no victims inside the apartment all firefighting endeavors were focused on making an early, aggressive attack on the fire coupled with an intensive search for any possible victims. While these tactics were being undertaken other crews ventilated the apartment in order to remove the pent-up heat and toxic poisons that were rapidly accumulating inside. The removal of the heat and the toxins make the interior of the unit more tenable for the firefighters and assists them greatly by helping them complete their assignments in a timely manner. The primary and secondary search of the unit revealed that all occupants had exited safely to the outside. A woman and her young son were the tenants in the fire unit and they were finally located in a safe area away from any danger. The tenants of the apartment that burnt lost their pet hamsters in the fire. There were no reports of injuries to any of the occupants of the apartment complex or to any firefighters at the scene. The fire was controlled in about 20 minutes however the arduous task of overhauling the fire scene would take considerably more time. Fire crews and members of the Dept.'s Special Investigation Unit remained on scene until mid-afternoon. Nine pieces of firefighting apparatus and three Command Vehicles were dispatched to the fire delivering 34 firefighters to do the difficult work that every fire requires be done. Damage to the apartment where the fire occurred was substantial; the owners of the building will have to decide what rehabilitation efforts will be made to the building. The two units below the fire apartment were damaged by smoke and water to varying degrees, the Red Cross was on scene to assist the tenants of the three damaged units with temporary lodging. At the time of this media release the cause of the fire is still being investigated.

NARRATIVE: On Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at 2:04 AM, 7 Companies of Spokane Firefighters, 4 Engines, 1 Heavy Rescue, 2 Senior Ladders under the direction of Battalion Chiefs Inman and Cornelius responded to a reported small motel fire "Christmas House" at 3000 West Sunset Boulevard.

On arrival, firefighters reported a fire visible next to door of unit on the street side with moderate smoke coming from inside of the unit. Fire was at the bottom of the wall extending up the structure.

It took 23 Firefighters just 30 minutes to knock down the fire and control the incident. Firefighters were able to limit the spread of fire to the room of origin. No civilians or firefighters were injured as a result of the incident.


PROBABLE CAUSE: The fire's cause has been determined to be discarded smoking materials.
DAMAGE EXTENT: One unit is untenable. The remaining occupants are able to inhabit the building. The Fire Prevention Division is also working with the owners of the property to address electrical concerns.

NARRATIVE: The Spokane City Fire Dept. was dispatched to 4312 W Arrowhead Road at 2:23 in the morning on Tuesday, May, 6th, for a reported structure fire at that address. The first fire crew on scene reported heavy smoke issuing from the eaves of a 2 story wood/frame day lighted basement dwelling, within minutes of their arrival they reported that flames were shooting out of the roof of the structure. As more fire apparatus began arriving at the scene an aggressive interior attack was launched coupled with a search of the entire building for any possible victims. The fire, now venting through the roof, actually relieved the pent-up heat and toxic gasses that had been building up inside the house and made the conditions inside more tenable for the firefighters to get their work done. The fire, which had begun in the garage ceiling, had burned through the second story flooring, through the second story ceiling and was burning freely in the attic space, was then knocked down quickly by the firefighters. The search of the interior revealed that the house was vacant and appeared to be under-going a bit of remodeling, neighbors stated that the house had recently been used as a rental. One firefighter at the scene fell partway into a hole which had been burned through the floor in the main hallway of the house; he caught himself and with the help of his partner was able to extricate himself without sustaining any injury. No other firefighters reported any injuries during the operations being conducted at this fire. The damage to the house was considerable. The heat of the fire had caused the soldered copper pipe joints to separate in the lower level ceiling allowing water to flow into that level of the home for quite some time. The upper level of the home was damaged heavily by the heat of the fire and the roof structure may have to be totally replaced. A total of 28 firefighters, 7 pieces of fire apparatus, and 2 Command vehicles responded to this early morning fire and remained on scene for about 3 hours. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Special Investigation Unit of the Spokane City Fire Dept. and preliminary indications are that the fire was accidental in nature.

PROBABLE CAUSE: Accidental
DAMAGE EXTENT: Fire, smoke, water, and heat damage was present on both floors of this house, in addition ceilings were pulled down and walls opened up to allow extinguishment of hot spots.

To the Men and Women of the Spokane Fire Department:

I would like to thank each of you for the generosity and outpouring of support you have shown my wife and I after my recent accident. On Thursday, April 17th, my right calf received second and third degree burns while I was operating on the scene of a shop fire in northern Spokane County. I stepped off a boat trailer and some cross members of the trailer that were hidden by burning debris lifted my pant leg up. My right boot was instantaneously filled with hot debris. My fellow members of District 9 provided initial care and treatment to my wound while I waited on scene for an ambulance. After arriving at Sacred Heart Medical Center, I was quickly informed that the hospitals in Spokane were not equipped to deal with my injury. The physician informed me that I would soon be on my way to Harbor View Medical Center in Seattle. A short jet ride later, I was landing at Boeing Field.

The care I received at Harbor View was more incredible than I ever could have possibly imagined. The men and women I came into contact with throughout the hospital were extremely kind, compassionate, and professional. I especially appreciate the individuals I dealt with during my brief stay on one of the burn floors. I had the opportunity to see a number of other individuals that had received burns much more severe than mine during my time on the floor. I got a chance to see individuals that are going to live with the scars and devastation most of us hope we will never know. My surgeon operated on me Monday, April 21st. I was released from the hospital a day later.

Monday, April 28th, I flew back over to Seattle for my first follow up appointment. The surgeon was extremely happy with how I was healing up. Aprox. ½ to ¾‘s of the my right calf had received second and third degree burns. The surgeon opted to graft everything in the hopes that my injury will be less noticeable when things heal. I was informed at my first follow up that the doctor would be requiring me to do follow up visits every two to three weeks for up to a one year. I believe they continue to be worried about infection, how well the graft is taking, and a whole host of other things.

All in all it hasn’t been too painful of an experience. The mot pain I have had has been a result of my maiden voyage into the world of catheters. If you haven’t yet had the pleasure, I would recommend that you do everything in your power to ensure that you don’t have to ever get one. I also highly recommend the phentonayl (s.p.) suckers. When my wound was being cleaned up, the nurses provided me with one. The feeling they provided was so great that I wanted to bring some back for any of you that would like to have a sample. However, since they are kept under tight lock and key, if you want to experience “the magic,” I guess you are just going to have to have your own injury.

On a serious note, I greatly appreciate the financial support you have provided. As you can imagine, the expenses incurred during my treatment and subsequent trips to Seattle has become very costly. I expect at least a portion of those costs will be covered by L & I and I am currently attempting to work with them to find out where things stand. The support you have provided will go a long way towards helping cover current expenses and costs as well as future expenses that aren’t covered.

As some of you know, I had the opportunity while growing up to spend a fair amount of time around the Spokane Fire Department. One of your comrades is the reason I decided to go into the fire service. As I continued to get older, I spent time around some the stations asking questions and continuing to be fascinated by the idea that maybe one day I too would get to work on a department. While my journey never created the opportunity to work directly alongside each of you, I continue to have a tremendous amount of respect for your organization. I still know a number of individuals working throughout the city and I believe they are some of the finest individuals I have ever had the pleasure of knowing.

Smoke could be seen from a ½ mile away by the first responding companies. Upon arrival the first apparatus reported heavy black smoke and flames showing from a 1st wood frame house. Fire from the fully involved house was impinging on the house to the east. Fire attack leads were advanced to the interior and to cover the exposure to the east. Roof ventilation was completed and a search was conducted. No one was found inside. It took about 20 minutes to extinguish the main body of the fire and 3 hours to complete overhaul and final extinguishment. The house and contents were total loss. Red Cross was called to assist 5 adults who were displaced. No injuries to report. The cause of the fire was determined to be an accidental.

NARRATIVE: The Spokane City Fire Dept. responded fire fighting apparatus to 2614 E Euclid at 1:31 in the afternoon on Sunday, April 27th, for a reported structure fire. The first arriving fire crew reported light gray smoke issuing from the roof vents of a single story wood/frame dwelling. As other apparatus and crews arrived on scene they immediately forced entry into the structure to simultaneously search the dwelling for occupants and endeavor to locate the source of the smoke still coming from the roof vents. A primary and a secondary search of the house revealed no one in the home, and the investigation into the cause of the smoke found smoldering blown-in cellulose insulation in the attic space. The ceilings in some of the rooms were pulled down and they revealed that this smoldering fire had completely burnt through 2 or 3 of the roof trusses at the ceiling and that 2-3 more of the trusses had been seriously damaged. Crews remained at the scene for more than an hour as they worked to remove the still smoking insulation to the outside of the structure where it could be completely extinguished. There were no reported injuries to any of the firefighters. The cause of this fire is being investigated by the Special Investigation Unit of the Spokane City Fire Dept. The damage to the house was confined to the attic space, the roof trusses, and of course the ceilings in the rooms where the sheetrock had to be removed.

NARRATIVE: On Sunday, April 27, 2008 at 4:21 AM, 6 Companies of Spokane Firefighters, 3 Engines, 1 Heavy Rescue, 1 Pumper/Ladder and 1 Senior Ladders under the direction of Battalion Chief Dan Brown responded to an unknown type structure fire at 1923 West Shannon Avenue.

Firefighters were initially dispatched to a large amount of smoke and fire coming from behind the address. While enroute, the first-due company upgraded the alarm to a working fire due to the close proximity of the adjoining addresses to the incident and large amount of fire showing on arrival.

To access the fire, the first two companies had to force gates and remove a privacy fence to obtain entry to the fire's location. They encountered a single story garage at the rear of the address with live utility (Avista) wires down and arcing. There was an intense fire that had consumed the majority of the structure and was impinging on a neighbor's home.

It took 21 Firefighters just 30 minutes to knock down the fire and control the incident. Firefighters were able to limit the spread of fire to the building of origin and limit additional damage to the adjoining homes and property. No civilians or firefighters were injured as a result of the incident.


PROBABLE CAUSE: The cause of this incident is under investigation by the SFD's Special Investigation Unit (SIU). The incident has been determined to be incendiary. More information regarding the investigation will be released when available.
DAMAGE EXTENT: The garage and contents are a total loss. Adjacent property received limited damage.
DOLLAR LOSS: 10,000

We cordially invite you to join us and family members of those who have lost their lives in the line of duty in law enforcement and fire in unveiling the eighth monument that commemorates the people and events that have helped make Spokane history. This event is being sponsored by the Fairmount Memorial Association in conjunction with the Spokane Law Enforcement Museum and the SPD History Book Committee to honor the men and women of the public safety sector who have protected our community for the past 127 years and those who have lost their lives while performing that duty. Spokane County has lost 39 officers, all male, in line of duty deaths. There have been 23 law enforcement officers and 16 firemen.

Spokane County statistics show that eight firemen died as a result of falls, two due to accidents occurring on the way to a fire, two due to health related problems, two due to building collapses, one due to electrocution, and one to smoke inhalation. On the law enforcement side, 13 officers died due to gunfire, 8 due to vehicle-involved accidents, one was beaten to death and one due to health related problems. To our knowledge we have never lost a volunteer law enforcement or fire department officer. The Spokane Police Department has lost the most officers with 14, Spokane County Sheriff’s Office – 4, Washington State Patrol – 2, Cheney Police – 1, Waverly Police – 1, Spokane county Game Department – 1.

As the committee continues to research our rich history, while completing work on the book “Life behind the Badge” they will continue to identify and immortalize those deserving citizens who have made Spokane the city it is today.

Please join us in celebrating the lives and the sacrifice of the public safety officers and their families. We are pleased to have the Spokane County Sheriff, Spokane Police Department, and Spokane Fire Department Honor Guards take part in this ceremony.

NARRATIVE: On Thursday, April 10, the Spokane Fire Department responded at approximately 11:00 PM to 1303 East Rowan on a reported structure fire. The first crew on scene reported heavy smoke coming from the front door of a 1-1/2-story, wood framed house. Aggressive interior attack by on scene fire crews confined the majority of the fire to a bedroom on the main floor with heat and smoke damage through out the structure. The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes and there were no reported injuries to firefighters or civilians.

PROBABLE CAUSE: The cause of the fire is under investigation by Spokane Fire Investigator Captain Kevin Smathers and he can be contacted at 625-7052. However, preliminary examination indicates the possibility of children playing with matches' ignited bedding in a bedroom located on the main floor of the house with fire spreading from that location.

NARRATIVE: At 1030 am Saturday April 5, 2008, the Spokane Fire Department responded with 20 Firefighters on 7 apparatus to a single family house at 3711 W. Queen for a reported structure fire. The first Fire Department apparatus on scene, Engine 16, reported light smoke coming from roof vents. A quick search of the house indicated that everyone was out and the fire was above the ceiling in the attic area. Using a thermal imaging camera along with overhaul equipment a portion of the ceiling in both the living room and kitchen were removed along with the insulation to determine the extent and spread of the fire. Some of the roof trusses were burned as were areas of the attic insulation. With careful removal of the insulation and a diligent investigation on the amount of burned insulation, all spread of the fire was stopped and damage minimized to the structure. There was very little water damage or smoke damage to the living area of the house. Utilities were left on and the windows remained intact so the resident was able to occupy the house immediately after the fire. Cause was determined to be electrical. The resident had replaced a blown fuse and heard a crackling noise. Upon exiting the house smoke was seen coming from roof vents. At this time the Fire Department was called. It was also determined that the incident was accidental and nobody was hurt. To minimize the chance of fire when a breaker trips or a fuse blows, you should determine the reason for the failure and correct any problems in the system. An electrician can be very helpful in running down electrical problems.

DAMAGE EXTENT: Some structural damage to roof trusses, living room ceiling and a small portion of the kitchen ceiling.

Orange County ends Rural/Metro contract, to allow firefighters to take over ambulance transport duty

Orange County leaders voted unanimously Tuesday to dump a private ambulance company and take over the service using firefighters.

Fire officials and the Orange County Comptroller's Office said taxpayers could net $6 million to $13.8 million in added revenues over five years by taking over the service from Rural/Metro Ambulance.

Company officials questioned those projections and said commissioners may regret the takeover move later.

Currently, county firefighters are the first to respond to emergencies in unincorporated Orange County. Rural/Metro workers arrive later and take patients to a hospital. But sometimes, Rural/Metro workers are tied up or arrive late, and firefighters handle hospital transports as well.


County leaders liked the added revenue potential but also wanted a more seamless system so patients were not handled by multiple emergency responders.

"Even if we just break even, I think the continuity of care is worth it," Commissioner Bill Segal said.

County firefighters already handle both patient response and hospital transport in the north and east parts of the county. One smaller slice of the west side of the county is served by another company.

Dozens of firefighters applauded the commission's decision. Many said the takeover was necessary for the well-being of patients.

Jason Brown, president of the department's union Orange County Professional Firefighters, said the workload will increase, but the plan, which takes effect Oct. 1, will smooth out the transport process.

"We no longer have to wait for commercial services to come. There won't be any delay," he said. "It will bring better service for the community."

A Rural/Metro executive said Tuesday's unanimous vote reflected takeover support from the firefighters union, a sometimes potent political force.

"There was clearly a short-term political decision" at play, said Rural/Metro official Robert Heffner.

The company declined to release its Orange County revenues.

Rural/Metro manager Roger Duryea said the loss of county patient-transport business would not put its workers out of jobs, saying they would be added to crews that handle the contracts for hospitals and the city of Orlando.

A spokesman for Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer said there are no plans to drop Rural/Metro, but officials will watch how the county's takeover plays out.

Never in our wildest dreams would we have expected to see Todd sandwiched between Chico the monkey and Mary Ann from Gilligan's Island. Yet, it happened today on KREM 2's website.

On a more serious note, looks like Todd has cleared his name. Thank God. It still makes you wonder about the people that the WSP has prosecuted that were also innocent, but didn't have Todd's tenacity and resources. It should send a chill down every American's spine.

NARRATIVE: On March 8th 2008 at 6:27 pm the Spokane Fire Department responded to a reported house fire at 4610 N. Maple. The house sat at the intersection of two major arterials in north Spokane creating a traffic concern. The first apparatus on scene, Pumper Ladder 13, reported heavy smoke coming from a 1 story approximately 900 square foot single family residence. As the first crew inside advanced a pre-connected hose line into the basement they found fire in the area of the furnace where combustibles had been stored. The crew did a fast knock down of the fire then proceeded to determine if the fire had spread to any other areas or into the structure. The fire was contained to the one area. Simultaneously a search of the house found that everyone had gotten out safely. Two adults and 3 children were assisted by Red Cross as the house was not safe to occupy due to the heavy smoke damage. The fire is currently under investigation by the Spokane Fire Department. There were no injuries reported to civilians or Firefighters. The Fire Department is not saying that combustibles to close to the furnace was the cause of this fire but caution should be practiced when storing anything in the vicinity of any type of heating appliance.

NARRATIVE: At 10:05 this morning, March 6, 2008, the Spokane Fire Department was dispatched to the area of 27th Avenue and Southeast Blvd. for smoke reported in the area. Upon arrival, the first engine investigated and found a 2 ½ story, single family house with smoke issuing from the basement. A full structure alarm was requested, responding four additional engines, a ladder, a rescue truck, and two Battalion Chiefs. Crews forced entry and attacked the fire, while other crews ventilated and searched for victims. The were no occupants home at the time of the fire. The fire was knocked down within ten minutes, but complete overhaul of the burned area took nearly three hours. There was heavy fire and smoke damage to the basement and additional heat and smoke damage to the upper floors. There were no firefighter injuries. The homeowner arrived while crews were still on the scene. The homeowner lives alone, and will be unable to occupy the house until repairs are made. The American Red Cross is assisting him with lodging.

PROBABLE CAUSE: The cause of the fire was determined to be a wood stove in the basement, installed with its chimney too close to a combustible wall surface.
DAMAGE EXTENT: There was heavy fire and smoke damage to the basement and additional heat and smoke damage to the upper floors.

KXLY Report on Todd's work to clear his name...

Thanks to Dean Carr for sending this information. If I read this correctly, they are "letting" Todd have a computer image of his hard drive, but only if he promises not to tell anyone what his investigator does/does not find on it.

Incredible! Is that legal?

And the way the story now reads on the KXLY post, Todd's home was searched one day and he was arrested the next! Wasn't Todd arrested first and then his home searched? This revision falls perfectly into line with the way the WSP says it does business in the article - namely seizing evidence without any notice to the alleged perpetrator (so he/she can't erase it), examining that evidence and then making the arrest if there is, indeed, evidence.

But, that's not what happened, is it? And even, it was, why would they seize evidence, arrest a suspect and then examine the evidence?

Strange. Very, very strange.

NARRATIVE: On Friday February 29, 2008 at 1:31 PM an SFD Pumper-Ladder 13 was dispatched to check on a good samaritan report of smoke that appeared to be coming from a vent at a home in the 4200 block of Washington. After the dispatch, Spokane Police Officers that we in the area arrived and reported a two story home with fire showing on both the first and second floors. The officers also reported that they were not sure if anyone was inside and they had attempted to make entry. The officers were prevented from doing so by security measures (bars on windows and doors) placed by the home owner.

The alarm was upgraded to a full-response and added 4 Engines, 1 Heavy Rescue, one Senior Ladder under the direction of Battalion Chiefs Inman and Cornelius. When the first company officer arrived, she reported a two story house with heavy smoke and fire showing. The home was an older "balloon frame" constructed home which included a full basement. First, second and third-in companies established a water supply and forced entry into the north and west sides of the home in attempts to search for victims and attempt to extinguish the quickly moving fire. The truck company performed vertical ventilation over the fire which had already extended into the attack and void spaces on the second floor. A two-person team from Engine 3 was nearly trapped in the basement during the attack and made it out as the basement flashed over. At that point as the incident commander was confirming all personnel were accounted for, a second alarm was struck to assist the companies operating at the fire.

Information was received (and confirmed) by the incident commander that the two occupants of the house were outside and accounted for. The strategy of the incident was changed to 'defensive' and the arriving second alarm companies deployed master streams from Ladder Companies and from the ground to confine the fire to the residence of origin.

Despite the difficulties with access and rapid fire growth prior to the SFD's arrival, the fire was contained. Both company members on Engine 3 were seen by paramedics, but not transported. They are still at work, and at time of this release are on the second structure fire at 1528 West Alice.


PROBABLE CAUSE: The cause is under investigation by the SIU.
DAMAGE EXTENT: The home is a complete loss. Two occupants are being assisted by the Spokane Fire Department CARES Team and Red Cross.

Minneapolis Bars figure out a way around smoking ban - "Theatre Night"...

It has been nice - going on calls into what were once smoky bars.

But, I have to admit I voted against banning smoking in bars. I thought, and I still do think, that it was an unnecessary government intrusion into the lives of those who frequent bars.

Looks like the folks in Minneapolis have found a way around the law. I don't know if Washington's law is the same, but if it is, don't be surprised to go to the Rainbow Tavern on an assault and find a very smoky rendition of Hamlet taking place.

NARRATIVE: On the afternoon of February 24, 2008 at 5:01 pm the City of Spokane Fire Department responded to 3724 South Tekoa for a reported fire in the kitchen ceiling. The first apparatus on scene reported light smoke showing from the roof. Upon further investigation fire was discovered in the ceiling above the kitchen. Crews quickly removed the ceiling and extinguished the fire. This fire was confined to the underside of the roof and insulation above the ceiling. The fire was knocked down with in minutes of the fire departments arrival. The crews checked for extensions and completed overhaul in about an hour and a half. Damage was confined to the kitchen ceiling and light smoke throughout the main floor. The cause of the fire appears to be an over heated recessed light above the kitchen sink. There were no injuries to report

On 02/14/08 at approximately 1828 hrs units of the City of Spokane Fire Department responded to 1228 W Chelan upon report of a structure fire. First arriving Fire Department units found a 1 ½ story, wood-frame, duplex, heavily involved in fire. Fire was evident in the rear or south portion of the residence. Fire Department members advanced pre-connected hose-lines into the south side of the structure, advanced to the second floor and soon had the fire under control. While the fire was being extinguished, other firefighters, searched the 1st and 2nd stories for possible victims, and ventilated the roof to allow smoke to escape the building. The fire was brought under control within about 30 minutes but SFD crews remained on to scene assure extinguishment for about another 4 hours. A total of 28 firefighters on 10 trucks initially fought this blaze with many other crews rotating into the scene to assist with overhaul and to provide security throughout the night. No injuries were reported to either firefighters or tenants of the residence. Significant fire damage was evident to the south stairway of the residence and to most portions of the second floor. The first floor had moderate water damage. Four tenants were displaced from the duplex with the Red Cross assisting each.

Probable Cause:


The cause of this fire is still undetermined and under investigation. Investigators were on scene during the evening hours and will return in the morning to continue the origin and cause determination.

Damage Extent:

Damage was extensive to the south stairway as well as to most of the 2nd floor. Water damage was evident on the 1st floor.

This evening, February 13, 2008 at 2210 hours, the Spokane Fire Department responded to a reported fire in the Kentucky Fried Chicken Restaurant located at 4016 N. Division St. The first arriving fire companies arrived within 5 minutes of being dispatched and found heavy grey smoke coming from the rear of the building. Workers from the restaurant reported that the fire was in the rear kitchen area and that everyone had safely evacuated the burning building. Fire crews forced a rear metal door off the kitchen area and attacked the fire with several fire attack leads. Additional crews ventilated the roof and front windows to assist the firefighters advancing the leads inside the building. Interior crews fought fire throughout the entire kitchen and rear roof areas. The firefighters brought the fire under control within 30 minutes. There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters at this incident. The restaurant sustained heavy fire and smoke damage. The cause of this fire is still under investigation. The official pronouncement will be made by investigators after all evidence has been reviewed. Fire crews will likely be on the scene for the remainder of the night.

Structure Fire

On February 8th, 2008 at 3:10 P.M. the Spokane Fire Department responded 3 engine companies, 2 ladder companies, 1 rescue company and 2 battalion chiefs to a house fire at 2654 N. Walnut. Fire crews found a wood frame home with fire in one of the upstairs bedrooms. A simultaneous attack, consisting of hose lines inside, ventilation crews on the roof, search teams inside and backup crews, were deployed and effectively, the fire was cutoff and contained after 25 minutes. The home had been occupied by a family of 5 and all were able to escape the house. There was a large population of pets inside the home consisting of cats, dogs, lizards, chinchillas, birds and rabbits and all were spared as most of them were on the first and basement levels. The Spokane Fire Department Community Assistance Resource Team (CARES) arrived along with the Red Cross and assisted with the family in making arrangements for lodging, clothing and food. The entire second floor suffered damage from fire and smoke. The roof was cut open to relieve the atmosphere below of heat and smoke, and some of the floor and wall in the bedroom on the second level was also breached in order to seek out and extinguish any hidden fire that remained. A thermal imaging camera was used to assist with this operation. There were a total 19 firefighters that fought this blaze. There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians. At this time, the fire appears to be electrical in origin. A fire department investigator was called to the scene.

Probable Cause:


Electrical wiring underneath the bedroom floor.

Damage Extent:

Heavy fire and smoke damage to both second floor bedrooms. Clothing, furniture, children's toys and keepsakes were all damaged in this fire. The structure suffered some water damage as well.

On 2-4-08 at 8:01 P.M. the Spokane Fire Department responded 3 engine companies, 2 ladder companies, 1 rescue company and a battalion chief to a fire in a home located at 1417 W. Shannon. Firefighters found a fire burning near a wooden stairway and rapidly extending through walls and floors nearby. Two adults and two children made their way to safety because they were alerted by working smoke detectors. A centrally supervised alarm system was present in the home and the fire department was alerted immediately because of this. Crews worked hard to expose the hidden fire in the walls and floor by cutting open these areas with pike poles, axes and chain saws. Due to the smoky conditions inside, this took some time but eventually, firefighters were able to expose all areas where the fire had traveled. The fire was successfully contained after 45 minutes. It appears that the fire began after a fire had been built inside a fireplace insert. After heavy use, hot fires and repeated exposure to radiant and conducted heat, wooden framing members surrounding the chimney ignited. Once this ignition occurred, the fire then extended vertically inside the wall and also caught a portion of the wooden stairway and floor above on fire. There was smoke damage throughout the home, a minimal amount of water damage, and heavy fire damage to the walls, staircase and floor. A total of 21 firefighters responded to this alarm. There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians. Shortly after the fire was contained, the Red Cross arrived to assist the family with arrangements. A working smoke detection and alarm system was key in alerting the family in this fire. The father had said that he had just put his children to bed and then his detectors began to activate. Firefighters remained on the scene until approximately midnight making sure all of the hotspots had been thoroughly extinguished. A fire crew will report to the scene this morning as well to complete some follow up work.

Probable Cause:


Repeated and heavy use of a fireplace insert that had with time, ignited adjacent structural framing members due to conducted and radiant heat.

Damage Extent:

Heavy fire damage to walls, a floor and the staircase. Smoke damage throughout the home and a small amount of water damage.

Structure Fire

On 2-4-08 at 12:05 P.M. the Spokane Fire Department responded 3 engine companies, 2 ladder companies, a rescue company and a battalion chief to an apartment fire located at 2006 W. Gardner. Upon arrival, fire crews found a fire burning on the second level of a 2 story home that had been converted into 4 apartment units. The fire was located in a wall and was rapidly extending into the attic. A rapid search was conducted throughout the structure and it was found that all occupants either had made their way to safety or were not at home. Firefighters had to fight their way through very poor visibility due to the thickening smoke and growing fire. Two teams of ladder crews were able to successfully ventilate the roof by cutting it open with their chain saws. This allowed the build up of heat and smoke to rise and increase visibility while at the same time, help confine the fire by drawing it in one direction. Firefighters were able to contain the fire after 40 minutes. The fire was caused by a plumber's propane torch that was too close to combustibles while doing some repair work within the home. There were 4 occupants that will be displaced temporarily while repairs are made to the home. These occupants will be staying with friends/relatives. An SFD CARES (community assistance response team) representative was helping with making arrangements for the tenants. A total of 23 firefighters responded on this alarm. There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians. The Spokane Fire Department would like to remind everyone that when using open flame, a clearance of at least 3 feet should be maintained between the flame and the combustibles. It is also recommended that a fully operational extinguisher be kept nearby at all times.

Probable Cause:


A plumber's torch while performing repair work, too close to combustibles.

Damage Extent:

Heavy fire damage to the upstairs bathroom and kitchen. Smoke and water damage throughout the 4 unit apartment building.

Talked with Todd this morning...

He wanted you to know the circumstances of his situation.

Todd was notified by Bank of America that his credit card was compromised in July or early August. The charges were made earlier in the spring. Someone had used his number to buy a camera and there were charges made to a Yahoo account. There was no description of these charges. Whoever had made the charges had used the wrong names and birth dates. Todd canceled the account immediately. He had no idea what the Yahoo account charges were about. There was no description.

Todd wanted all of you to know that he very much appreciates your support. Your phone messages to him have meant a lot after what he has been through.

Todd says that this has been a very humiliating experience for him, and your confidence in his strength of character has helped him a lot.

"I throw more power into my voice, and now the flame is extinguished," wrote Irish scientist John Tyndall about his experiments with sound and fire in 1857. Countless public demonstrations and a handful of lab tests later, researchers are still struggling to determine exactly how sound snuffs flames.

Sound travels in waves, which are simply variations of pressure in a medium—whether solid, liquid or gas. The energy from vibrating objects, such as speaker membranes, moves from particle to particle in the air in a repeating pattern of high- and low-pressure zones that we perceive as sound. According to the ideal gas law, temperature, pressure and volume are related; therefore, a decrease in pressure can lead to a corresponding decrease in temperature, which may explain how sound can extinguish a flame.

In 2004 Dmitriy Plaks and several of his fellow students at the University of West Georgia tested whether sound waves can douse fires in hopes of using sound to extinguish flames in a spacecraft. VIDEO They placed a candle in a large topless chamber with three bass speakers attached to the walls. The candle was lit and the Canadian rock band Nickelback's "How you remind me" was pumped through the subwoofers. Within roughly 10 seconds, once the song hit a low note, the flame was out, according to results published in 2005 in The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America.

Structure Fire

On January 20th, 2008 at 12:16 A.M. the Spokane Fire Department responded 3 engine companies, 2 ladder companies, 1 pumper ladder company, 1 rescue company and 2 battalion chiefs to a house fire located at 3110 N. Alberta. As crews were enroute to this incident, it was reported that there may have been an explosion and that a child may still be inside the home. When firefighters arrived, the entire back half of the house and an attached storage shed were fully engulfed in flames. A search and rescue team was set up and coordinated with a fire attack team as well as rooftop ventilation and it was soon confirmed that all occupants were safe and accounted for on the outside of the home. The fire was successfully knocked down and contained within 30 minutes and through firefighting efforts, crews were able to prevent the fire from consuming the front half of the home. As soon as the fire was contained, the long and arduous task of overhaul began and continued until 4:00 A.M. This involved pulling ceilings and removing burned items including structural members of the home. All of the occupants will be staying with friends and the Red Cross was notified for any other assistance that they may need. A total of 24 firefighters responded and fought this blaze. The cause is currently under investigation by the Spokane Fire Department Special Investigation Unit and has been undetermined at this time. There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians on this incident.

Structure Fire

On January 17th 2008 Thursday at 11:07 a fire was reported in a storage unit at Self Storage 322 East Foothills Dr. Upon leaving the Station Ladder Company 2 reported a large column of smoke showing from a storage complex. Arriving on scene L2 reported several units were fully involved in flame. Large diameter hose lines were advanced to attack the fire. The storage units were metal clad construction which made it very difficult to gain entry and attack the fire. All the metal doors faces had to be cut by saws in order to release smoke and heat so firefighters could advance leads into the units, also door locks were cut. The roof was trenched about 150 feet from the first storage unit on fire; this was done to prevent the spread of fire into other units. Five units and contents were heavily damaged by fire and smoke. In all eighteen units suffered smoke and heat damage. It took about forty minutes to knock the main body of fire down. Overhaul and final extinguishment took an additional four hours. There were no injuries to report. Twenty three firefighters and three command personnel responded to this incident The Fire Department Community Assistance Response team (CARES) responded to this incident to render any help that may be needed for the tenants of the storage units. The cause of this fire is under investigation.

Structure Fire

At 11:44 pm January 16, 2007 the Spokane Fire Department dispatched 3 Engines, 1 Ladder Truck, 1 Pumper Ladder, a Rescue Truck and 2 Battalion Chiefs to a reported house fire at 7007 N. Tucannon in Northwest Spokane. Upon arrival of the first Engine Company they reported a split level style house fully involved. Fire and smoke were coming out windows on the street side of the house. A 4th Engine Company and an investigator were dispatched for a total of 25 Firefighters. An aggressive frontal attack through the front door coordinated with ventilation of the house resulted in a fast knock down of the fire. A search of the house indicated that everyone had gotten out. At home at the time of the fire were an adult female and 3 school age children. The family was alerted to the fire by working smoke detectors in the house and there were no injuries to the occupants. There were no injuries of Firefighters as well. Firefighting efforts were made a little more difficult due to the cold temperatures in the low 20's F. and significant ice build up on the streets in the area. Crews will be on scene the rest of the night to assist with the investigation of the fire as the cause has not been determined at this time. Damage was extensive to one bedroom and a hallway with heat and smoke damage throughout the rest of the house. The lives of 4 people could very well have been saved due to the smoke alarm activation that notified the family of the fire. Again the Fire Department cannot overstate the importance of working smoke detectors in the home, they do save lives.

Structure Fire

On 1/15/08 at 10:12 A.M. the Spokane Fire Department responded 4 engine companies, 1 pumper ladder company, 1 ladder company, a rescue unit and 2 battalion chiefs to a report of a fire in a house located at 5727 N. Calispel. Upon arrival, fire crews found a well involved home with fire coming from the windows. A rapid entry was made by forcing doors and crews began to search the structure for victims while at the same time extinguishing the fire. Fortunately, no one was at home at the time of the fire. However, one deceased cat was found inside. Spokanimal was summoned to the scene to assist with the cat. It took firefighters 15 minutes to extinguish the fire but they remained on scene for a number of hours to make sure all of the fire was completely out. Upon close examination, it was revealed that a portion of one of the exterior walls had been forced out. The special investigative unit of the Spokane Fire Department arrived and began their investigative work. It was found that the fire was caused by combustibles placed too close to a gas fired water heater. These combustibles soon ignited and then the flames burned through the regulator next to the water tank which allowed a larger amount of gas to escape and ignite. When the gas ignited it created an explosion which pushed out the exterior wall to the home. Two firefighters received minor injuries during the blaze. One received a foot injury and the other received a leg injury. Firefighters completed final extinguishment and then began the long process of debris removal. Crews were present at the home until the late afternoon. The Spokane Fire Department "Cares" unit was brought to the scene to assist the family with making arrangements for shelter, clothing and food. The American Red Cross was also notified. A total of 22 firefighters responded to this fire along with 2 battalion chiefs. The Spokane Fire Department would like to remind the public that a 3 foot clearance or more needs to be kept around and from any hot water heater or electrical panel. Water tanks like these are typically located in basements or areas where storage items accumulate and sometimes these combustibles end up within the 3 foot radius of the tank. Make sure and keep your electrical panel doors shut as well. The family will be staying with friends while their home is repaired and restored.
