NARRATIVE: On June 24, 2007 the Spokane Fire Department responded at approximately 10:55 PM to 1517 East Rockwell. The first crew on-scene reported smoke and fire showing at the at the back of a One story, wood framed single family residence. The occupants of the structure reported that the fire was in a bedroom in the basement. Fire fighters aggressively performed an interior attack on the fire while additional fire crews completed search and rescue, roof ventilation and salvage and overhaul. The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes. Two civilians were taken to a local hospital with one male occupant treated for 1st and 2nd degree burns to his feet and hands and one female occupant was treated for possible smoke inhalation. One firefighter was also transported to a hospital and treated for smoke inhalation and was released and returned to duty approximately one hour later. Eight fire companies with 26 firefighters responded to this fire and were on scene for approximately 2.5 hours. Two adults and one child were displaced by the fire and are being assisted by the Spokane Chapter of the American Red Cross.
The Spokane Fire Department would like to take this opportunity to state the importance of installing properly working smoke detectors through out your home. The occupant in the basement bedroom of the residence did not have a properly working smoke detector and narrowly escaped the fire.
PROBABLE CAUSE: The cause of the fire is under investigation by Fire Investigator Lt. Greg McClatchey.
DAMAGE EXTENT: Fire damage was confined to the basement with heat and smoke damage through out the rest of the structure.
